Champion on Ice: Alejandra Osuna's Triumphant Path to Figure Skating Stardom

Every athlete’s road to success is unique and has a story to tell, but none more so than Alejandra Osuna’s. A name that is now synonymous with figure skating excellence, was not always destined to become a champion. In fact, her path to being a champion was fraught with challenges and obstacles that would have deterred many before her.

Alejandra’s figure skating journey began in Mexico City, where she took up lessons at the tender age of eight. She hasn't looked back since and quickly rose through the ranks of the sport in her native country, eventually entering competitions on an international level. This is no small feat, as there are very few opportunities for aspiring figure skaters to be discovered and get sponsorships in Mexico.

Yet, her love for the sport and determination to succeed made her a natural in the rink. One of the things that Alejandra loves most about figure skating is the constant challenge it presents.

"This is a sport that is always challenging you. No matter your level or your age, there are always new things to try, corrections to make, and ways to grow. I like this because I can set personal goals and challenges that encourage me to improve my level and become a better skater."

However, her journey has not been without setbacks. Alejandra faced her biggest challenge when she hit puberty and started gaining weight. Her weight affected her skating and caused her depression, making her feel demotivated to continue practicing her sport.

To make matters worse, she also suffered a third-degree ankle sprain during this period. Alejandra realized that her weight was not only affecting her skating but also her health. For two years, she worked hard, developing better eating habits and building a stronger, lighter body that was functional for her sport and healthier for her overall well-being.

One of Alejandra's biggest strengths in this sport lies in the beautifully choreographed routines that she performs to perfection. From her powerful jumps to her graceful spins, Alejandra brings artistry and passion to the ice that continues to leave audiences in awe.

However, when there is a room for strength, there is also a room for improvement. Alejandra recognizes that her biggest weakness in this sport is her mind, which is why she puts a great emphasis on mental training with a help of a sports psychologist. She understands that her performance quality is largely determined by the strength of her mental game and how well she can manage and overcome the pressure.

Today, Alejandra is an internationally-acclaimed figure skating champion who has won numerous awards, representing her country in various events. Her career highlights so far include winning her first Gold National Medal in junior level, something she had always dreamed of since she was a little girl, and qualifying for a Junior Grand Prix.

Alejandra’s future plans include achieving the minimum marks to qualify for the Four Continents 2024 and representing her country in the 2025 Winter FISU World University Games.

"My coaches and I have made a work plan to work these six months in increasing my level and give me the necessary consistency, especially in my jumps, so that next semester we can compete in some international events and look forward to achieving the minimum technical points required for these competitions."

Courage and tenacity are the most important qualities of a champion figure skater. Falling multiple times is part of this sport; it’s a reminder that taking risks is an essential part of success. But her journey was far from over. As she looked to the future, she knew there were more challenges ahead, more goals to achieve, and more dreams to chase.

And as she continued to train and compete, she hoped that her story would inspire others to never give up on their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.

So to anyone who was struggling or feeling discouraged, Alejandra had one message: "Be unstoppable, not because you don’t fail or have doubts, but because you continue on despite them, no matter how hard it seems to be."
